Bom Bunuh Diri Kembali Hebohkan Rusia

Dua hari setelah dua bom bunuh diri terjadi di dua stasiun di Moskow, Rusia, aksi serupa kembali terjadi dan menewaskan sembilan orang.

“Dua bom bunuh diri terjadi lagi dan salah satu pelakunya meniru polisi. Sembilan orang tewas dan 18 lainnya terluka di Provinsi Dagestan, Rusia Utara,” demikian pernyataan pihak berwajib Rusia, Rabu (31/3).

Bom bunuh diri tersebut mengguncang Kota Kizlyar dekat perbatasan Dagestan dan Chechnya. Menurut Mendagri Rusia Vyacheslav Gasanov, bom tersebut meledak di dalam mobil, ketika polisi menyuruh si pengemudi untuk menepi dalam pemeriksaan lalu lintas.



Ketika penyelidik dan masyarakat berkumpul di TKP, pembom bunuh diri kedua yang mengenakan seragam polisi beraksi. Ia mendekati lokasi pemboman dan membunuh sejumlah orang. Termasuk di antaranya kepala polisi setempat.

Pada ledakan Senin (29/3), dua stasiun di Moskow juga diserang dua pembom bunuh diri perempuan (black widow) yang menewaskan 39 dan melukai 70 lainnya. Hal tersebut menyusul aksi intensif aparat Rusia untuk membasmi militan di wilayah Kaukasus Utara. Pemberontak itu juga berasal dari Dagestan dan Chechnya.

Belum ada kelompok yang mengaku bertanggung jawab untuk aksi-aksi bom bunuh diri ini. Sementara PM Vladimir Putin bersumpah pada rakyatnya akan meringkus siapapun pelakunya. Kejadian serupa terakhir menghebohkan Rusia pada 2004 pada sebuah stasiun kereta api di Moskow.

Kim Kardashian was dumped by Reggie Bush because of her sex tape. The American footballer but he was uneasy about settling down with the socialite because the 2007 video - which features raunchy footage of the brunette and her then-boyfriend Ray J - made his mother uncomfortable.

A source told X17 online: "Reggie's mom just could not get over the fact that Kim had a sex tape. Reggie and his family are very conservative, and he told Kim that a marriage is never going to happen between them because of the tape."

Kim is said to regret the video more than ever now as she believes she would still be with Reggie, 25, if it had never been made public.

The source added: "She's still crazy about him. If she didn't have the sex tape, she could have been Mrs. Bush."

A friend said: "Reggie is surrounded by a bunch of his single friends. He wants to be a party guy, hang with the boys and date other people."

Kim is currently in Miami, Florida, with her sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian but plans to attempt to build a friendship with her former lover when she returns to Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

One insider told E!: "There hasn't been any communication as of late. But that will change once she gets back to Los Angeles.

"They have a dog together and stuff at each other's homes. It's not like they're enemies. They will work on their friendship, but it will happen very slowly."

News of Reggie and Kim's separation came less than a month after the couple - who had been dating for almost three years - reportedly bought a $4.8 million love nest together in Beverly Hills.

Oral Sex Link to Head Cancer

The number of serious head and neck cancers linked to a virus spread by oral sex is rising rapidly and suggests boys as well as girls should be offered protection through vaccination, doctors said on Friday.

Despite an overall slight decline in most head and neck cancers in recent years, cases of a particular form called oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have increased sharply, particularly in the developed world.

This growth seems to be linked to cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), the scientists said in a report in the British Medical Journal.

Two vaccines - Cervarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, and Gardasil, made by Merck & Co - can prevent HPV, which causes virtually all cases of cervical cancer, the second most common cancer in women worldwide.


Many rich nations have launched HPV immunization programs for girls to try to protect them from the common sexually transmitted virus before they become sexually active.

The scientists, led by Hisham Mehanna of the Institute of Head and Neck Studies at Britain's University Hospital Coventry, said that while including boys in immunisation plans was previously seen as too expensive, it may be time to look again.

"We need to look at the evidence again to re-evaluate the cost-effectiveness of male children in light of this new and rapidly rising incidence," he said in a telephone interview.

More than 500,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed annually in women and it kills around 200,000 a year. Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer among men and women, with about 640,000 new cases each year worldwide.

A recent study found the risk of developing oropharyngeal carcinoma was linked to a history of six or more lifetime sexual partners, four or more lifetime oral sex partners, and, for men, an earlier age at first sexual intercourse.

"Sexual transmission of HPV - primarily through orogenital intercourse - might be the reason for the increase in incidence of HPV related oropharyngeal carcinoma," wrote Mehanna.

The experts pointed to recent studies which showed a 70 per cent increase in the detection of HPV in biopsies taken to diagnose oropharyngeal carcinoma in Stockholm since the 1970s.

HPV-related cancer was also reported in 60 to 80 per cent of recent biopsy samples in studies in the United States, compared with 40 per cent in the previous decade, they wrote.

Mehanna said the findings had other important health implications. Patients with HPV-related head and neck cancers are typically younger and employed, he said, and because their tumors appear to be less deadly than those caused by factors like smoking and drinking, patients may also live longer with the physical and psychological effects of treatment.

"This means they would need prolonged support from health, social, and other services, and may require help in returning to work," he wrote.

Cyber Criminals Change Tactics

Mass indiscriminate computer attacks are giving way to highly targeted individual attempts in a new wave of professional cyber crime, experts say.

Right now millions of computers are being targeted all over the world. Home computers and telecommunications companies are the two user groups most under threat worldwide. In Australia alone, 2.95 million attacks have been detected, originating mainly from Canada, the US and China.

According to Symantec, the maker of Norton AntiVirus and owner of corporate email filtering company MessageLabs, between 20,000 and 40,000 new threats are discovered every day by its 11 security labs around the world.

The worrying new trend is that while mass attacks were the norm in the past, targeted, almost single-user, attacks have started to appear.



Hand-picked individuals in corporations are receiving emails and electronic documents that resemble something they expect to see in their inbox, only to unleash trojans and other malware on to their corporate networks.

In its new report, MessageLabs says the top-five targeted job titles are director, senior official, vice-president, manager and executive director. Top of the list are those responsible for foreign trade and defence policy, especially in relation to Asian countries.

The recent hacking attempts on Google and up to 20 large US corporations were aimed at extracting specific information from single users. Individuals appeared to have been targeted according to their position or access to corporate information, according to the chief architect of security technology and response at Symantec, Carey Nachenberg.

In one documented case, senior managers received an infected PDF agenda for a conference they were planning to attend. Opening the document either tried to download and install an executable file, or directed the user to a credible-looking website that was in fact an attempt at phishing.

"What's very unique about this is people had a lot of patience," says Nachenberg, who is responsible for several security patents and teaches computer science at UCLA. "They spent a lot of time putting their targets together. The purpose of the attack we can only guess. We don't know who got the information and for what purpose."

He says malware authors have switched from mass distribution of a few exploitable threats to micro-distribution of millions of distinct threats, each with different instructions and individual fingerprints.

Symantec has detected 120 million distinct threats in the past 12 months. Some, like Vundo, had been distributed to 18 users, while others, such as Harakit, had attempted to infect only 1.6 users on average.

The security response manager of F-Secure Labs in Malaysia, Chia Wing Fei, cites another strategic exploit example.

"We detected a banking virus that is only interested in PCs in Europe," he says. "It won't infect PCs anywhere else, even if the user goes to the drive-by website. The virus uses the user's IP address to determine targets."

Chia says security vendors have detected a rapid professionalisation of cyber crime. Attacks are no longer perpetrated by script kiddies looking for kudos but organised gangs moving in underground communities bent on generating big dollars.

Gangs are now employing IT professionals and business minds to carefully plan their moves and stay one step ahead of detection. Interestingly, they trade their goods on the internet, commanding high prices for the proceeds of crime.

"When we get too close, they find out," Chia says.

A security report by Symantec that focused on the underground economy in late 2008 estimated the potential value of total advertised goods on the black market was more than $US276 million ($305 million) annually.

The most traded commodity was stolen credit card information, followed by stolen bank account data. Credit card numbers sell for as little as US10¢ to $US25, while bank account information can fetch between $US10 and $US1000.

Vendors such as AVG and McAfee suspect the majority of cyber attacks are now the work of a small number of criminal gangs that also deal in other crimes. "We're talking about dozens of crime gangs off and online that organise money laundering and credit card fraud," says a global security strategist at AVG Technologies, Larry Bridwell.

"There's a small number of incredibly [capable] hackers that make up the largest amount of fraud."

The vice-president of threat research at McAfee, Dmitri Alperovitch, says gangs have built pyramid-like schemes of small operators who are unaware of the size and nature of their employer. They recruit unsuspecting people, including pensioners, who have to do little but withdraw and transfer regular amounts of money.

"They have roughies who ruffle up people locally to make sure the money mules pass on their pay," Alperovitch says.

AVG says despite continuous improvement in technology security, online crimes still happen because 30 per cent of all machines run with outdated antivirus software or with it turned off, criminals make increasingly more money and big corporations don't patch their machines as often as they should.

In a statement on his website, Martin says: "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."

But the 38-year-old singer says that writing his memoirs helped him realise that he had to be free with himself, and not keep any more secrets. His book hasn't been published yet.

The Puerto Rican wrote about the advice others gave him to hide his sexuality.

"Many people told me: 'Ricky it's not important', 'it's not worth it', 'all the years you've worked and everything you've built will collapse', 'many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature'.


"Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage.

SYDNEY, KOMPAS.com - Icons including the Great Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower and China’s Forbidden City will be plunged into darkness Saturday as millions take part in “Earth Hour”, a rolling grassroots movement aimed at tackling climate change. Now in its fourth year, the global campaign promises to be the biggest ever, organisers said, with thousands of cities and towns in 125 countries pledging to take part, despite last year’s failed climate talks.


Hopes for a binding treaty to halt global warming were dashed when December’s summit of world leaders in Copenhagen only yielded a general agreement on limiting warming to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Seen even by its supporters as a disappointment and a chaotic failure by critics, Copenhagen was expected to have scuttled people’s hopes for meaningful action on climate change, explained Earth Hour founder Andy Ridley.

“But the craziest thing this year is that rather than that happening, the reaction to Earth Hour has been immense. It is so much more than last year,” Ridley told AFP.

“There appears to be some fatigue to the politics around it... But people are far more motivated this year than they were last year,” when 88 countries took part, he added.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 when 2.2 million people switched off the lights in their homes, offices and businesses for 60 minutes to make a point about electricity consumption and carbon pollution. The campaign went global the following year, and this Saturday, March 27, more than 1,200 of the world’s best-known landmarks will kill their lights at 8.30pm local time in what organisers describe as a “24-hour wave of hope and action.” A raft of major multinational corporations including Google, Coca Cola, Hilton, McDonalds, Canon, HSBC and IKEA have endorsed Earth Hour 2010 and pledged to darken their offices worldwide in support.

Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House will help kick off the energy-saving marathon, with Egypt’s Great Pyramids and Sphinx, the Trevi Fountain and Tower of Pisa in Italy and all major landmarks in Paris to take part, led by a five-minute blackout of the Eiffel Tower. Beijing’s Forbidden City — the figurative and geographic heart of the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases — will go dark, along with the so-called “Bird’s Nest” Olympic stadium.

Elsewhere in Asia, where 3.3 million people have registered to take part, the world’s biggest observation wheel, the Singapore Flyer, will extinguish its main lights, while official buildings will be blacked out in Seoul. WWF Indonesia said around 200 buildings in Jakarta would be taking part in the blackout.

Japan’s heritage-listed Hiroshima Peace Memorial, one of few buildings to survive America’s 1945 atomic bomb attack, will take part, while major companies including Sony, Sharp and Asahi were to switch off across Tokyo. Some 30 US states and municipalities were to take part, with an hour of darkness at sites including Mount Rushmore, the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge and Seattle’s Space Needle.

And in Dubai, the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa tower, will also dim its lights. Residents of Norway’s Longyearben, the world’s northernmost town, are set to brave an influx of curious polar bears normally deterred by lights after voting — for the first time — that participating was worth the risk.

“Earth Hour is meant to cross geographic, economic, country boundaries,” said Ridley, admitting that it was mostly a symbolic act. “It’s one hour, one day, one year.
